Things to Consider When Looking Into College for Your Child with a Learning Disability

Introduction

As a teacher of adolescents with learning disabilities, you will need to work closely with these students on transition services. One of the many transition services you will be involved in may pertain to helping parents prepare their children for college. It is important that you help parents understand that they will need to investigate several college programs to find a good fit for their children. This investigation should begin as early as the 11th grade and involves visitations, meetings, consultations, and collaborations with college professionals associated with these special programs. It will be important to remind parents that their children with disabilities will be spending the next 2 or 4 years attending this school, many away from home. This handout will help parents consider the many factors that need to be taken into consideration when investigating college options for their children with disabilities.
