NASET's Board Certification Programs

NASET Board Certification Programs

NASET has always provided high quality resources, publications, and professional development to our members. In 2007, NASET introduced the Board Certification in Special Education (BCSE) program to meet the ever growing need for in depth professional development for special educators. Since the development of the BCSE program, NASET has recognized the need for additional comprehensive education programs for specialized areas of special education that have either gained increased popularity or were underserved for special educators.  The subsequent demand for qualified staff to work in or train other staff for these areas of special education was the catalyst for the development of our latest Board Certification Programs.

The following are brief descriptions of each of the 4 Board Certification Programs offered by NASET. To learn more about these programs, please click on the Board Certification Badge for the program of interest. Be sure to look for and view/download the specific handbook that is available for each program. These handbooks contain detailed information about the program and should address any questions you have and address core features of everything you need to know.

Board Certification in Inclusion in Special Education

Implementing inclusion education (IE) is a significant challenge facing the educational system. One of the main difficulties in implementing inclusion education is that special and general education teachers may receive insufficient training to work specifically in complex teaching contexts like an inclusion setting and not always have sufficient training to respond to the unique needs of students in their classroom.

NASET BCISE program was designed to provide the required expertise to both work in and train other staff in how to implement and maintain IE. The NASET Board Certification in Inclusion in Special Education (BCISE) program is comprised of a comprehensive compilation of 30 Units of study broken down into 5 specific Modules. Each Unit contains video lectures, PowerPoint presentations, supplemental videos and supplemental readings. Board Certification in IEP Development

NASET’s  Board Certification in IEP Development is a step-by-step practical program that provides comprehensive professional development of all areas of Individualized Education Programs (IEP) for students with disabilities receiving special education and related services. The program assists educators, and state and local educational agencies in implementing the requirements of Part B of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) regarding IEPs for children with disabilities, including preschool-aged children.

NASET’s  Board Certification in IEP Development is divided into 2 sections.

  • Section I covers all federal guidelines and mandated requirements for IEPs under IDEA.
  • Section II focuses on the practical knowledge you will need to develop, write, and implement an effective IEP.

Completion of NASET’s  Board Certification in IEP Development  provides you with the knowledge, skills and abilities to develop and implement all sections of an IEP. To learn more use the following link: https://www.naset.org/career-center/board-certification-in-iep-development-bciep

Board Certification for Advocacy in Special Education

Because there are no federal or state legislative or regulatory guidelines for the educational or credentialing requirements for special education advocacy, it is essential that the highest level of knowledge of the special education process, the professionals who work with children with disabilities, and the laws regulating the process be integral to the certification process. NASET have recognized the need for qualified special education advocates and have created a comprehensive special education advocacy program whereby upon completion, you become a Board Certified Advocate in Special Education.

The BCASE program is comprised of a comprehensive compilation of 30 Units of study broken down into 6 specific Modules. Each Unit contains video lectures, PowerPoint presentations, supplemental videos and supplemental readings.
