The Gateway Academy

Description:

Gateway Academy is a unique school in Houston, Texas that serves 6th grade - young adult students with academic and social challenges. We opened our doors in 2006, committed to teaching traditional academics, while also meeting the social and emotional needs of our students with learning and social differences. Over the last seventeen years, our work has been to create a safe space that provides students with the opportunities for academic achievement, learning self-awareness, and practicing self-advocacy as they become employable and ready for the next step in their lives.

Students/Disabilities Served:

Gateway serves 6th grade-young adult students with the following social and learning differences:

  • ADHD

  • Anxiety

  • Autism Spectrum Disorder

  • Specific Learning Disabilities

  • Depression

  • Other learning and emotional difficulties

Services Provided:

  • Academic Program - Texas High School Diploma

  • Social/Emotional Program - Social Communication classes, counseling services, skills-building and more.

  • Employment Program  - culinary work experience, internships at businesses around Houston with coaches on-site, personal finance course, job-skills training, and part time job acquisition.

  • Parent Training

  • Self-Management Support

  • Speech Therapy

  • High School Transition Workshops

  • Student activities including art, theater, student council, athletics, and house system

  • FitClub each morning and a robust athletic program

  • Collaboration with outside services to fit the needs of the individual

Student Support Team includes:

  • Licensed Professional Counselors

  • Board Certified Behavior Analyst

  • Speech Language Pathologists

  • Dean of Students
