Benway School
Description:
Benway School is a therapeutic-based program with the belief that emotional growth and academic success go hand-in-hand. We are committed to maintaining a creative, nurturing, and family-like environment to help teach our students in the way that works best with their needs and learning styles. Benway utilizes visual, auditory, and kinesthetic teaching styles to ensure that every child has a chance to grow, learn, and be successful. Promoting the framework for our students to live successful, self-determined lives is our utmost priority.
Our school features a plethora of technology including 3D printers, robotics, iPads, Chromebooks, Promethean Boards, drones, a tech lab, and more! Our Technology and Transitions program won awards in 2017 for Leadership and Innovation in Special Education from both the National Association of Private Special Education Centers (NAPSEC) and the New Jersey School Boards Association (NJSBA). Technology and Transitions immerses our students into growing technologies through Benway's Maker Space and Technology Lab. Our advanced program is aligned with the recommendations of global leaders in STEM Pre-University Outreach. All students are afforded hands-on learning with TinkerCad, 3-D printing, laser cutting technology, and Digital Citizenship, and a STEM program that includes a wide array of engineering concepts. Benway supports our coders and gaming enthusiasts through Coder Z competitions and ESports. Additionally, Benway offers an Art Studio, and Music Lab which includes both traditional and modern approaches to teaching the arts. Notably, our music lab not only provides some of the latest audio recording software including Logic, Reason, and GarageBand, but also numerous wind, string, wood, and brass instruments. We have recently added an electronic drum kit to accompany our array of traditional drums.
Transitioning from adolescence to adulthood is challenging for every young adult. This is especially true for those with varying learning abilities and styles. Utilizing a solution focused mindset, Benway offers an individualized, vocational and professional certification program for these students. The program is organized to include a 2+ year-track depending on the students needs and goals. Our students have a number of options available to them including our: Academic and Career Readiness Dual Enrollment Program for Grade 11 & 12, Shared-time program for students grade 11 & 12 (HoHoKus) and Post-High School Transitions Program for students ages 18 – 21.
Another area that sets us apart is our philosophy that the best way to develop a student is through a complete wellness approach. We believe the benefits from physical activity help children grow mentally, as well as physically. For this reason we not only have a Physical Education program, but a weight room with a weight training elective, two coed Varsity and JV sports, and our NAPSEC award winning Burpees At Benway program. Benway's sports programs compete in a full season schedule in both basketball and softball, the latter of which won the league title in 2015 and 2019! The Benway Falcons compete to help our students develop motor skills, learn how to work as a cohesive unit, build self-esteem, and develop a strong work ethic. The Burpees at Benway program provides middle school students with an outlet to start their day in a healthy way, while releasing excess energy, and has been proven to increase academic and behavioral performance. Benway is committed to the belief that success comes from developing the "whole body" and not just the mind.
