The Hill Center
Durham, North Carolina
The Hill Center in Durham, NC offers a unique and innovative half-day program for students in grades K-12 who are diagnosed with learning disabilities or attention deficit disorders. Its 180 students attend from over 70 Triangle Area public and private schools for intense remediation in reading, writing, math and/or Spanish (in high school), spending the rest of the school day at their base schools. On average, students are enrolled in the model school for two to three years, make significant academic gains, and return to their base schools full-time. Over 95% of The Hill Center high school graduates go on to college, compared to the national rate of 40%. The 4:1 student/faculty ratio allows close interaction between teachers and students. The program uses research-based multisensory structured language instruction, based on the Orton-Gillingham approach. The NC Department of Public Instruction, Southern Association of Independent Schools, and Southern Association of Colleges and Schools certify the academic program.
Academic help for struggling students with all types of learning differences (no diagnosis necessary) is available through other programs:
- The Summer Session, a five-week intensive program mirroring the half-day program for K-8 students.
- Hill Tutoring Connection serves over 300 students in the Triangle area in many different subjects.
- Student Enrichment Programs offer courses in SAT Review, study skills, keyboarding and more.
Internationally recognized Teacher Training Workshops are offered through The Hill Center and have provided over 7,000 educators with solutions for working with students who learn differently. General educators, special educators, Title I teachers, administrators, and learning specialists are among the participants who have attended from 80 North Carolina Counties, 17 states and 10 countries. Workshops are conducted year-round and on-line courses and certificate programs are also available.
