Learning Prep School

Description:

Founded in 1970, LPS has established a well-earned reputation for providing a safe and supportive learning environment for students with language and learning challenges. While our primary focus is educating students with language-based learning disabilities, our student profiles are complex and varied. Students with other learning disabilities and/or social communication challenges have always prospered as a result of the teaching and learning dynamics of our instructional program and our structured environment.

Emphasis is placed on developing and refining those skills which are essential for our students to successfully navigate the challenges and avail themselves of the opportunities required to enjoy a high quality of life. Our educational program emphasizes the cognitive and affective needs of our students, providing them with the core knowledge, essential skills, and moral compass that will enable them to achieve success in life.

Learning Prep is approved by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. We understand that a primary challenge for children with complex learning profiles is becoming comfortable in the school environment. Many of our students have enjoyed success in a traditional learning environment. One of the keys to success for our students is the comfort level they experience at our school. Our students and their parents often express the sentiment that they know they are valued here, that their needs are met and, as a result, their self- confidence and competence has increased immeasurably

Students/Disabilities Served:

Learning Prep students are involved throughout the school day. From the moment our teachers and counselors greet them during morning arrival, and continuing throughout their small classes and service sessions, our students experience a personalized level of attention from a staff that is well-equipped to understand and meet their needs. Student involvement is evident throughout our school, in projects, clubs, and every classroom. Our staff is equally involved in providing the right combination of accommodations and opportunities that help every student progress toward reaching personal potential.

Students at Learning Prep have complex learning profiles including dyslexia, expressive/receptive language issues, autism spectrum disorder, and social communication disorder. Our individualized language-based program allows our students to make significant gains. Our learners are taught in a safe environment, in small classes, grouped by skill level, using direct teaching methods and individualized instruction. The deep integration of services in speech, counseling, and occupational therapy provides a uniquely collaborative approach among our staff, creating a program appropriately responsive to each child's academic growth and personal achievement.

Our students typically have associated needs in one or more of the following areas:

  • Independent use of strategies
  • Problem solving
  • Self-advocacy
  • Academic frustration
  • Social skill development
  • Transition planning

While most of our students are diagnosed with a language-based learning disability, some students have also successfully attended our school with additional diagnoses.
