The purpose of this position is to provide support and performs duties as assigned under the direct supervision of the classroom teacher(s) and by the general direction of the Principal or Assistant Principal.
The Knapp School (Therapeutic Day School) serves students who have been referred from their home school districts to us in order to receive individualized and intensive educational programming in our supportive and therapeutic environment. This position is based at the Joy Faith Knapp Children’s Center in West Rogers Park, IL. Essential Job Responsibilities:
Executes lesson plans as assigned by the classroom teacher(s).
Participates and cooperates in special events, activities, parent/teacher conferences as deemed necessary by the administration.
Supports the classroom teacher(s) and carries out assigned duties.
Works individually or with small groups of students as assigned by the classroom teacher(s).
Helps supervise the lunchroom during the lunch period with the assigned classroom teacher.
Under the supervision of the classroom teacher(s) or the administrator, may have limited oral and/or written communication with students.
Respects student’s confidentiality.
Willing and able to perform a variety of tasks to ensure the safety of students.
Be familiar with and assist in implementing students’ crisis support plans, including elopement protocols.
Successfully completes training in Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI); successfully complete all requirements to maintain certification in TCI and UKERU.
Effectively intervenes in students’ disruptive behavior, both verbal and physical; including using TCI and UKERU prescribed methods to de-escalate critical situations.
Uses TCI prescribed methods to manually restrain students who are a variety of heights, weights, and strength capacities should they become physically out of control and consequently a danger to him/herself or others. This task may involve taking the student from a standing position to the floor, deflecting and or absorbing blows, bumps, kicks, spitting and other physically aggressive acts, moving furniture or other large, heavy objects in order to clear a space in which the student can be safely restrained.
Additional Job Responsibilities:
Represent JCFS and its programs in a positive manner to both internal and external contacts.
Performs other duties as assigned.
High School Diploma or certified GED.
ISBE Certified Paraprofessional or ability to obtain certification (requires 60 hours of college credit)
One year of related experience.
Ability to successfully complete Therapeutic Crisis Intervention training (Agency provided).
Experience working with students with special educational needs is preferred.
New hires would need to be fully vaccinated with 1 or 2 doses and booster and provide their card upon hire OR begin receiving the booster within 2 weeks of being hired and participate in weekly COVID testing until fully vaccinated OR provide documentation for an ADA or religious exemption and participate in weekly COVID testing.
