Bishop Ireton High School, a Catholic college preparatory school in Alexandria, Virginia, is seeking a full-time Special Education teacher for the Options Program to begin immediately. The Options Program first opened in Fall 2020, serving students with intellectual disabilities and developmental disabilities with a cognitive impairment. Quick Overview:

We are looking for a teacher leader for the Options Program. The ideal candidate will have experience serving students with intellectual disabilities in a variety of settings. 

The teacher would need to be passionate about supporting inclusion in an academically rigorous environment as well as qualified to teach differentiated, developmental instruction based on student needs. The options Program teacher would help support success for both the student and general education teacher in the inclusion classroom. The teacher is also a key member of the larger Special Services team and should be excited to not only teach, but also work collaboratively to grow this new program.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Teach skills-based classes for students with intellectual disabilities in the following areas:

  1. Reading
  2. Functional Math
  3. Social skills, employment skills, etc., depending on student need
  • Differentiate support for a variety of students with numerous diagnoses

  • Support general education teachers with best-practices in inclusion and appropriate use of accommodations and modifications in the general education classroom

  • Work collaboratively with general education teachers to modify curriculum for students in the Options Program

  • Weekly communication with parents of students in your classes or on your case load

  • Manage an assigned case load of Student Assistance Plans/Individualized Catholic Education Plans (our versions of 504 Plans/IEPs) from eligibility to implementation to review.

  • Appropriately respond to any unexpected behavior situations supporting student needs and providing examples for how adults should respond

  • Coordinate related services with ACPS for students who qualify

  • Locate or create resources to provide for teachers/staff to understand the needs of students with intellectual disabilities, answer staff and student questions with helpful suggestions for success

  • Work closely with Peer Mentors to help support students in all aspects of student life at Bishop Ireton; co-lead on-going professional development for Peer Mentors

  • Actively participate in developing curriculum for the Options Program including possible adoption of supplemental resources or texts

  • Attend regular Special Services team meetings and on-going PLC/professional development meetings

  • Find and attend on-going professional development opportunities to stay current in the field of special education

  • Help arrange informational sessions for student and parent orientations at the beginning of the school year.

  • Help strategize and implement the development of related school programming for a full inclusion experience (ie. Special Olympics, etc.)

  • Attend at least two recruiting/welcoming/student support events outside of school hours each school year

  • Choose and effectively implement a minimum of one major leadership role for the Special Services Team (options include: Peer Mentor Lead, Student Assistance Plan Lead, SAP Coordinator, Inclusion Support Lead, EL Student Support Lead, etc.)

  • Throughout the year, work closely with the Director of Special Services and the Department Chair on tasks related to student/teacher support and program development/evaluation


  • Bachelors or Masters degree in Special Education

  • Preferred - Certification for teaching students with intellectual disabilities and/or adapted curriculum and experience working with students with intellectual disabilities in a variety of settings

  • Experience differentiating reading or math instruction and/or expertise in supporting the developmental processes of acquiring reading and math skills.

  • Experience managing a special education case load to include the eligibility process, writing IEP/504 Plans/SAPs, monitoring implementation, and on-going communication with stakeholders.

  • Proven ability to remain calm and problem solve during unexpected behaviors or events

  • Exemplifies a deep belief in and commitment to educational excellence for all students

  • Has read current research on best practices for supporting students with intellectual disabilities in an inclusion environment or is willing to get current on research prior to first day

  • Track record of working well on a team

  • Effective oral and written communication skills
