Special Education Teachers are responsible for planning and implementing an effective program of instruction based on students’ Individual Education Programs (IEP’s). Job duties include, but are not limited to:

  1. Develop and implement an appropriate IEP for each student by assessing student needs, determining appropriate instructional goals and objectives, designing instruction to meet student needs, and evaluating student progress.

  2. Work cooperatively with Program Supervisor, Building Administrators, teachers, and other Intermediate Unit and school district staff to teach students functional skills within the least restrictive environment.

  3. Utilize research-based instructional and behavioral support techniques in order to reach IEP goals and objectives.

  4. Establish a consistent classroom, instructional schedule, and maintains an orderly learning environment.

  5. Collect data and maintains adequate records of pupil progress as required by the Department of Education.

  6. Submit required reports which document students’ educational progress.

  7. Communicate effectively with parents, school, and IU13 personnel.

  8. Plan and oversee the duties of instructional support staff assigned to the classroom.

All Community School students have IEPs; however, many students are instructed at an age equivalent comprehension level. Students may display verbally or physically aggressive behavior requiring physical intervention. Community Schools provide an onsite support team including Program Supervisor, Behavior Support staff, Social Worker, School Psych, School Police Officer, SEC, and School Nurse.


Position requires a bachelor’s degree and active PA certification in Special Education (PK-12, Grades 7-12); core content area certification is preferred.

All staff must be certified in Safe Crisis Management (crisis prevention and physical intervention model), training will be provided.
