Teacher Assistant

The Teacher Assistant assists the classroom teacher in carrying out the academic and behavioral objectives set forth in the child’s Individualized Education Plan (IEP) by providing direct instructional services to students and performing non-teaching support duties under the supervision of the classroom teacher. He/she will also:

  • Assume primary responsibility for class in the absence of the teacher.
  • If bilingual, work with Spanish dominant children creating an “alternative placement” for children who need a bilingual placement.
  • Work with individual pupils or groups of pupils on special instructional projects or assignments.
  • Collect and prepare instructional materials as directed by the teacher.
  • Assist with crisis intervention and classroom supervision.
  • Assist teacher in the development of instructional behavioral objectives for the Individualized Educational Program (IEP).
  • Assist in maintaining order and cleanliness of the classroom.
  • Supervise students during lunch program and provide for the special dietary needs of some children.
  • Participate in In-Service training, faculty meeting and team meetings.
  • Write in notebooks and/or translates for parents.
  • Call parents especially when language is an issue.
  • Request supplies for the classroom.
  • Initiate projects in the classroom.
  • Participate in ordering instructional supplies.
  • Toilet train children, change diapers, wash children’s soiled clothes and clean children as necessary.
  • Assist children who need individual attention during naptime.


  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED)
  • Level I or higher NYS Teaching Assistant Certificate
  • Experience working in Special Education or an Early Childhood Program required
