Organizational Unit Overview:

The STEPP Program's mission is to provide students with learning disabilities who aspire to achieve a college education and who demonstrate the potential for postsecondary success with access and comprehensive support throughout the university experience. By partnering with these students, their families, and a variety of educational communities, the STEPP Program fosters a network of opportunities and resources to empower and support students from admission to graduation from East Carolina University. By providing access to college for a bright group of students, designing an integrated and collaborative system of support on a public university campus, researching short-term and long-term outcomes, and partnering with a continuum of educational settings based on what we learn, STEPP will achieve the ultimate goal of the program – to open the door to a college education for students with learning disabilities here and at other universities.

Job Duties:

The STEPP Program Specialist will deliver seminars and coordinate supported study halls for student participants. Study hall sessions will reinforce connections between strategies and skills taught in seminars and content and assignments from courses in each student's regular academic schedule. The person in this position will monitor and support program tutors, including providing training and feedback regarding tutoring sessions and activities. The STEPP Program Specialist will work closely with the program Director, Associate Directors, and others to monitor and revise seminar curriculum as needed. The person in this position will maintain an office presence and provide as-needed support to students. Thus, this position will require establishing and following a consistent daily schedule. The Specialist will be accessible to students participating in STEPP during the fall and spring semesters and will collaborate with offices and programs across campus as appropriate.

Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in related field
  • Strong communication skills (written, oral, and listening)
  • Strong planning, organization, and interpersonal skills
  • Willingness to set and maintain a steady daily teaching schedule
  • Successful related prior experience

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

  • Valid special education or related teaching license
  • Successful experience teaching students with learning disabilities
  • Master's Degree in learning disabilities or related area
