Special Education Teacher, 6th-8th grade Intensive Support

Job Summary:

To develop and implement individualized educational programs which address the needs of special education students at the grade level(s) they are assigned. The instruction will incorporate a collaborative and proactive approach to supporting students, especially those with unique needs, in behavior management, social skills, emotional awareness, cognitive problem solving, academic, prevocational and vocational, and transition skills. To plan, prepare and deliver quality specially designed instruction to learners with diverse needs in a variety of educational settings.

Duties and Responsibilities:

This list of essential job functions is not exhaustive and may be supplemented as necessary. Depending upon individual assignment, the employee may perform all or a combination of several of the following duties:

  • Conduct comprehensive functional behavior assessments;

  • Develop effective behavior support and behavior intervention plans, oversee plan implementation, and evaluate effectiveness;

  • Develop consultation relationships with special and general education teachers, service providers, and administrators;

  • Effectively communicate complex information on behavior, behavioral assessment, and implementation of behavior plans to staff;

  • Oversee programming within the district in order to ensure consistency, quality, and appropriate practice;

  • Establish, plan and develop personalized, in-depth, active learning experiences that meet district and state grade level equivalents for assigned academic areas for the purpose of increasing student achievement and communication skills.

  • Work with students that have behavioral, learning, and social-emotional challenges and build programming to support their individual learning

  • Consult with staff on topics including behavior management, classroom modifications, and appropriate inclusionary practices;

  • Effectively manage and maintain data and systems to support student progress

  • Support general education staff in educating students with Individualized Education Programs (IEP).

  • Modify general education curriculum to meet the needs of students receiving Special Education Services.

  • Deliver effective instruction and facilitate achievement for all students.

  • Provide guidance, support, and supervision in the development of respectful, responsible students.

  • Maintain and submit records including student progress.

  • Maintain effective, positive communication with students, parents/guardians, staff and administration.

  • Collaborate with other staff and administration.

  • Other related duties as assigned.

Specific Requirements for this Position Qualifications, Skills & Abilities:

  • Experience at the middle school level.

  • Right Response training or de-escalation training or history with similar behavior intervention programs encouraged.

  • BIP/FBA experience preferred.

  • Strong Communication Skills - both in an online format and in person.

  • High degree of team planning with other staff.

  • Specific training related to understanding and implementation of age appropriate curriculum.

  • Strong management skills, use of positive behavior support.

  • Personally uphold board policies and follow administrative procedures while assisting others in upholding and enforcing school rules, administrative regulations, and board policy.


$65,314.00 to $131,968.00 Salary
