High School Learning Support Teacher

Established in 1972, the American Community School of Abu Dhabi (ACS) is a non-profit, U.S. accredited college preparatory school serving a culturally diverse student body. Our American, standards-based curriculum provides excellence in academics, the arts, athletics, and service. ACS is preparing for a 2023 move to a new, state-of-the-art campus in Abu Dhabi on nearby Saadiyat Island.

We are looking for an experienced and passionate teacher to join us for the 2022/23 school year as part of the High School Mathematics and Learning Support Departments. 

Job Description for High School Teacher:

The position will include Applied Mathematics (emphasis on the connections between concepts and the practical uses for mathematics in life and in the workplace), co-teaching Integrated Mathematics I or II and supporting students in a Learning Lab (focused on promoting executive functioning skills and developing study strategies, organizational skills, time management, goal-setting, reflection, self-awareness, self-advocacy and independence).

Working Hours:

Sunday through Thursday: 7:45 am to 4:00 pm, except Tuesdays which end at 4:30 pm. Normal hours will be adjusted as need dictates and may be greater at certain times of the year.

  • Design and facilitate relevant student-centered, standards-based, learning experiences

  • Monitor student learning and make appropriate modifications to meet student needs

  • Reflect with colleagues on learning evidence (data) to improve student outcomes

  • Create a well-structured digital learning environment that empowers students to think, create, innovate, and collaborate

  • Maintain accurate, up-to-date records of student progress and attendance

  • Engage parents and students in the learning process through consistent and meaningful communication

  • Support students during Tutorial between 3:20 and 4:00 p.m. Sunday-Thursday

  • Serve as an advisor within our pastoral care program to help personalize each student’s learning environment

  • Engage with students beyond the classroom to extend learning experiences (coaching, organizing field trips, sponsorship of events, service learning projects etc.)

  • Engage in collaborative planning sessions to help meet the goals of the department

  • Engage in weekly Professional Learning Team (PLT) meetings

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree with a valid teaching certificate/license in relevant content area

  • Minimum of four years, full time teaching experience in relevant content area

  • Teaching experience in a standards-based, 1-to-1 digitally-rich environment (preferably in an international setting)

  • Strong assessment practices in a standards-based environment

  • Relevant IB and/or AP experience

  • Knowledge of the Understanding by Design framework and research based pedagogical practices in relevant subject
