Autism Home School Teacher

Palo Alto, CA

Job Category: Teacher (Autism Home School)

Posted on June 04, 2017

Description:

A Unique Opportunity for the Intellectually Curious in Autism Education and Adult Development

We are looking for an experienced and enthusiastic autism education specialist to be the main curriculum development and program director/teacher for our homeschool program.

The ideal candidate will have an advanced degree in special education with a focus on autism, and a deep interest in developing unique curriculum and activities for young adults with autism.

The core thesis of our homeschool model is that young adults who are in the mild to severe part of the spectrum have significant life experience that affords them certain advantages. These individuals benefit most from exposure to new and varied experiences that are common to their neuro-typical peers, rather than repetitive and uninspiring activities that are typical of most adult day programs. This approach is combined with continued focus on core academic skills and a range of activities in arts, physical and intellectual exercises, with the aim of stimulating the mind.

The position involves working on the curriculum with our son through the program hours, taking him out on walks and community activities, and generally responsible for him throughout the class hours (9-12 and 1-3). We may also employ an aid for this position to assist you in these activities. We have a curriculum that we have modified and tested over the past three years and includes several modules including reading, math, arts and crafts, science, social studies, and other elements. The program will also include music, art and other therapists who come one or more times per week.

The position is based at our home in Palo Alto. The hours are from 9 am to 5 pm, with instruction hours from 9 am to 12 pm, and 1 pm to 3 pm. There is one hour for lunch break and two hours for activity research and development (3- 5 pm).

The compensation is based on your experience and education and will be highly competitive with other institutions and school districts, and will have full medical and other benefits, plus the added flexibility of working with a single student and a family.
