John A. Coleman School

Mission

Inspired by the legacy of St. Elizabeth Seton, the John A. Coleman School creates loving learning environments that enable all children to achieve their fullest potential. Driven by the highest standards of excellence in our daily practices and partnerships with families, we offer exceptional educational opportunities that respect and celebrate the uniqueness of each child

Philosophy

The John A. Coleman School is a child-centered educational environment where the partnership between student, family and staff supports learning each day. Through loving attention and care, we celebrate and honor the individuality of every child, and respect and nurture the cultural and religious backgrounds of our students and families. Through content-based instruction, including multi-sensory adapted lessons based on New York State Learning Standards, our children have the opportunity to learn, explore, interact with the world around them, and to engage in creative arts and community activities.

Sponsorship

The Sisters of Charity of New York sponsor John A. Coleman School as a concrete expression of our mission to reveal God’s love to all in need, especially the poor.  The mission of this faith-based school extends the mission of Charity by the quality of its programs, its fiscal stability and its organizational culture.  We work in partnership to promote our common values.

School Description

The John A. Coleman School, with campuses in Yonkers and White Plains, operates with a current annual budget of $14 million providing special education for children from birth through 21 years of age.  Coleman is a non-graded school that places children based upon their academic achievement, social development, level of physical development, and management needs.  The school is approved by the State of New York Department of Health and the New York State Department of Education.

The Yonkers campus provides educational services to children that are residents of the Elizabeth Seton Pediatric Center, a pediatric skilled nursing facility for children with complex medical diagnoses that require ongoing medical and nursing care.  The White Plains campus is the largest provider of center-based preschool special education in Westchester County, educating over 300 children from 23 school districts.  Early Intervention, Preschool and School Age programs are available at both sites with programming tailored to the individual needs of each child and family.

Related services including psychological counseling, occupational, physical, and speech / language therapies and skilled nursing services are provided by appropriately licensed and certified staff.  Music therapy and adapted physical education are also available as part of the school program, as well as bedside instruction for children who are unable to attend a classroom based program.
