Block Institute School

Block Institute School, formerly known as Brooklyn School for Special Children, was founded in 1962 by Rabbi Morris Block.  Block Institute School currently serves preschool students with disabilities ages 3-5 in segregated settings within classes with student to staff ratios of 9:1:3, 10:1:2, 12:1:2, and integrated setting with a ratio of 7 special education + 8 general education:1:2.  The program also has a private non public school program for children ages 5-8 who have been classified by NYC Department of Education as Autistic, Emotionally Disturbed, and or Other Health Impaired served within staffing ratios of 12:1:1 and 6:1:1.  Block Institute School offers, at a small fee, extended day and full day daycare.

Our staff is certified by NYS Department of Education and is experienced and caring with the population we serve.  Our facility is a barrier free air conditioned secure building.  We have an indoor gym, outdoor playground and heated indoor pool.  Our school is a full day program that serves breakfast and lunch daily.   We have vegetable gardens that the children maintain.

Block Institute School’s curriculum addresses each child’s unique academic, physical, social and emotional needs and reinforces each child’s interests and abilities.  We present choices among hands-on activities that foster experimentation, exploration and guided and self-directed learning.

Block Institute School provides mandated related services in the areas of Speech Therapy (English and Spanish), Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, and Counseling (English and Spanish). Our medical staff includes an RN and LPN to ensure the health and safety of all children we serve.  We provide additional support services to families through parent training and support groups.

Block Institute’s mission dedicated to improving the quality of life for the developmentally disabled and their families.  Within the school we strive to encourage a love of learning and assist each child to discover his/her own strengths while learning new skills.
